Preparing children for the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time allows us to teach them that God is love and that in mercy He is always ready to forgive, no matter what we have done wrong. It assures children that God already knows the secrets of our hearts, but sometimes we need to name these out loud to prepare our hearts to renew the experience of God's love and forgiveness. The Sacrament of Reconciliation brings about a reconciliation with God and the Church. It also increases grace, spiritual peace, and spiritual strength. What a beautiful gift!
First Holy Communion is considered one of the holiest and most important occasions in a Catholic person’s life. It is the first time that a person receives the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist, which is the True Presence of Jesus Christ. The Eucharist is the Sacrament of Love, the most perfect of all gifts. Worthily receiving Holy Communion brings about an increase of grace, the remission of venial sins, a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ, and preparation for an everlasting union with God in heaven.
Most Catholic children receive their First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion when they are 7 or 8 years as this is considered the age of reason. Students actively prepare to receive the Sacrament of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion both at home and in the Catholic school or School of Religion classroom. The students in both the school and the School of Religion celebrate the sacraments together in 2nd grade. First Reconciliation takes place in the fall and First Holy Communion takes place in the spring.
Parents are the primary teachers of the Catholic faith. This includes attending Sunday Mass as a family, sharing their faith with their child(ren), and modeling how to live life as a follower of Jesus Christ. Teachers and Catechists provide support to the parents by reinforcing the Catholic faith through evangelization and catechesis.
